Register Now for Rebecca School’s 2019 DIR Conference!

What are the essential components to promote a student’s creativity and curiosity? During this one day conference, participants will understand how Floortime™ and the DIR® model can be used across the disciplinary domains with students of all ages.  Breakout sessions will address a range of themes including how curiosity and creativity develop through meaningful relationships across the developmental ladder. By cultivating curiosity and creativity, students are able to build a strong foundation necessary for productive learning and development in a shared world. Presenters from the Rebecca School, the self-advocacy and ICDL community will show how following a student’s passion can both build a strong relationship and accomplish discipline specific goals. This conference is open to self-advocates, professionals and parents.

Keynote Speaker: Morénike Giwa Onaiwu

Morénike Giwa Onaiwu, is an Autistic woman of color, educator, writer, public speaker, parent, and global advocate. A proactive, resourceful professional, Morénike, whose undergraduate and graduate degrees are in International Relations and Education, is passionate about human rights, justice, and inclusion. She is a contributing author/editor of several publications, abstracts, and books focusing on community engagement, HIV research, disability, diversity, and nontraditional leadership. Morénike has been an invited speaker in the White House, at the UN, and numerous national disability, advocacy, and research conferences.

Rebecca School SLPs at ASHA!

Our Speech and Language department “Brought Play to LA” and presented at the AmericanSpeech and Hearing conference for the 3rd consecutive year. The conference was a true success as the department presented to an audience of over 600 SLPs on play development, the importance of early pre-linguistic skills, and of course on DIR/Floortime.

Rebecca School at Only Make Believe Broadway Gala!

Our very own student Collet was invited to participate in the Only Make Believe Gala. Collet had participated in their program over the summer and was chosen to speak on stage about his experience. He was amazing and we are all very proud of him here at Rebecca School!

Rebecca School Visits The Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater!

What a great time the Rebecca School had visiting the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater’s Autism Friendly performance of The Princess, the emperor, and the Duck in Center Park on March 21st, 2017. The overall experience was wonderful and memorable for our students. This was all made possible by the thoughtfulness and preparation of the staff at the theater, the Parks Department, and Historic House Trust.

Accommodations included closer drop off site, dimmed lighting, and access to sensory space. We can’t wait to visit again!

Creative Writing Teacher Donnie Welch will be presenting at SXSWedu on the Rebecca School poetry workshops. He will be running a thirty minute model workshop to help educators implement similar writing workshops in their own schools and classrooms.
