Rebecca School Visits The Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater!

What a great time the Rebecca School had visiting the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater’s Autism Friendly performance of The Princess, the emperor, and the Duck in Center Park on March 21st, 2017. The overall experience was wonderful and memorable for our students. This was all made possible by the thoughtfulness and preparation of the staff at the theater, the Parks Department, and Historic House Trust.

Accommodations included closer drop off site, dimmed lighting, and access to sensory space. We can’t wait to visit again!

Chris Giarusso talks about writing and illustrating G-Man, Ruben Bolling looks on

A group of students having one professional working in the comic industry visit them is an incredibly special thing.  On Friday November 20th the students of Rebecca School’s Comic Book Club were given a special visit from both Chris Giarusso and Ruben Bolling.  You read that correctly, two professionals were in the classroom to donate their time and knowledge.  Thank you so much to both of our guests.

Rebecca School Comic Book Club students

Rebecca School Comic Book Club students.

Both are accomplished, award winning authors and illustrators.  Mr. Bolling recognized for his comic strip Tom The Dancing Bug and children’s books Alien Invasion In My Backyard and Ghostly Thief of Time.  Mr. Giarusso recognized for his own G-Man comic series and work done for Image, Marvel and DC Comics.

The event started with introductions, the students were incredibly curious and asked Mr. Giarusso and Mr. Bolling questions both about their work and their personal interests.  After questions and answers the visiting cartoonists read some of their work to the students, every word left them wanting to read on.  Mr. Giarusso read from his recently published G-Man Super Journal: Awesome Origins and Mr. Bolling from his book Alien Invasion In My Backyard.

The students were then treated to drawings and autographs from both of our guests.  Images of the autographed books, comics and drawings received by the students can be seen in the events image gallery.

It was an amazing experience to both watch drawings of favorite characters come to life and hear text read from the people who wrote it.  We are extremely grateful to Mr. Giarusso and Mr. Bolling for donating their time to us.  Please check out the works of our guests at their websites.  Artwork created by Rebecca School’s Comic Book Club students are being featured on both sites.

We look forward to the next projects created by Mr. Chris Giarusso and Mr. Ruben Bolling.  You keep writing and drawing and we will keep reading!

Both Chris & Ruben have recently been published by AMP. Without questions AMP is one of the best publishers or all age books.  Please be sure to check out all of the wonderful material they publish via their website.

Comics from Antarctic Press!

Antarctic Press has been the home of over 850 original comic books titles since 1984.

Over the decades the company has also been home to “inspired” titles such as Steam Wars.

The company does a tremendous job featuring artwork that is all done in a Americanized Japanese Manga style.

In addition to that the company also produces “how-to” books that instruct readers on ‘how to’ create their very own comic book.

We are extremely grateful for the generosity of Antarctic Press and look forward to continuing to read the wonderful books the company publishes.

Please check them out here;

Donations from ONIPress!

Arguably one of the best companies putting out all age books; ONIPress was generous enough to donate a sampling of some of their finest publications.

The students from Rebecca School Comic Book Club are now fortunate enough to enjoy works such as: Terrible Lizard, Sketch Monsters, XOC: the journey of a great white, and Mermin to name a few.

Keep putting out the great comics so we can keep reading!

Comic Book Club Visits 4K Media!

It would be very difficult to say who had the most fun on the recent field trip to 4KMedia: The students from the Rebecca School Comic Book Club, the staff from Rebecca School or the staff from 4KMedia.  4KMedia is a group of media professionals who bring all things Yu-Gi-Oh! to the United States.

The students from Rebecca School’s comic book club are some of the franchise’s biggest fans.
The staff at Rebecca School are some of Rebecca School’s students biggest fans.

The trip which had been in the works since September of 2014 finally came to fruition when staff and students arrived at 4KMedia offices. We got off the elevator to be greeted by all things Yu-Gi-Oh. Chalk Murals, posters, framed cards, toys and videos to start the list. The students were in awe of everything they saw.  We did not think it could get any better, then we met the staff, one of the most generous group of individuals to ever host the Comic Book Club on a field trip. The thoughtfulness that went into planning the time we spent at 4KMedia was remarkable.  And the students were lucky enough to meet a Ghostbuster too!

And just when we thought the staff of 4KMedia had left us with not only memories that will last a lifetime and stories to be shared between staff and students they gave us more. The students each received original artwork by 4KMedia artist Jason. Ghostbuster Chris went above and beyond to make gift bags for each student. Each gift bag contained a DVD of Yu-Gi-Oh, two packs of Yu-Gi-Oh playing cards, a paper craft toy as well as a pendant made on a 3D printer.

Our last surprise came when the Rebecca School Comic Book club were invited by producer Shane into a recording booth to record our voices for an upcoming episode of the newest cartoon series; Yu-Gi-Oh: Arc V! We will be the cheering crowd!

The Rebecca School Comic Book Club again would like to thank the amazing staff at 4KMedia. You gave us an incredible and unique experience. The students not only have the work you do as something to aspire to in regards to their future careers but can look also to emulate the type of people you are. Michelle and Fran, words cannot express our gratitude but I will attempt to by saying thank you so much for organizing (what the students and staff are still referring to as the best field trip ever) such a wonderful day for us.
